Back in February I took some pictures at some friends' wedding. I was not the official photographer, although they gave me permission to run amongst them (both photographers were also just friends). It was an interesting experience, also happened to be the first time I "shot" a wedding.
I also understand why good wedding photographers can charge what they do.
